The IEA's Sustainable Development Scenario

This event will showcase the IEA’s newly updated Sustainable Development Scenario, highlighting in particular the scenario’s relevance for businesses seeking to understand the energy and climate implications of their current and future operations through scenario analysis.

The event brings together the all-of-energy analytical authority of the IEA with the private-sector insights of CDP, to provide concrete examples of how the IEA’s benchmark Paris-compliant scenario can be applied by private sector enterprises.

The IEA’s updated Sustainable Development Scenario, presented in the World Energy Outlook 2018, shows how the energy sector can contribute simultaneously to achieving several of the Sustainable Development Goals related to energy: achieving universal energy access (SDG 7); reducing the impacts of air pollution (SDG 3.9); and of course tackling climate change (SDG 13). For the first time this year the scenario also includes a water dimension, assessing both the water needs of the Sustainable Development Scenario and the energy implications of achieving universal access to water and sanitation, as envisioned in SDG 6.

CDP, formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project, runs the global disclosure system that drives companies, cities and subnational governments to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, safeguard water resources and protect forests. Over 7000 companies and 750 cities and subnational governments disclosed environmental data, including energy and water-related data, through CDP in 2018.
