The Future of Geothermal Workshop
Background information
The International Energy Agency (IEA) is organising a workshop on geothermal energy on 11 October 2024. Geothermal is a promising and versatile renewable energy resource with vast untapped potential for electricity generation, heating and cooling. The geothermal industry is at a critical juncture, with new technologies enabling access to previously untapped resources driven by cost reductions and innovative financing models paving the way for its increasing role in clean energy transitions.
This workshop will provide a unique platform for direct engagement between leading public and private sectors stakeholders who will share their experiences, insights, and challenges they face in innovating and advancing geothermal technologies and creating business cases to ensure that policy frameworks are aligned with industry needs and innovation pathways.
The valuable discussions and outcomes from this workshop will directly feed into the IEA’s upcoming report on geothermal energy, which aims to provide actionable recommendations for accelerating the adoption of geothermal energy worldwide. The publication is planned for late November.
The workshop combines presentations based on recent developments with interactive discussions held under the Chatham House Rule.
The workshop is by invitation only.
