India Energy Policy Review 2020

Report launch — New Delhi, India

Abstract

The International Energy Agency (IEA) regularly conducts in-depth peer reviews of the energy policies of its member and association countries. This process supports energy policy development and encourages the exchange of international best practices and experiences.

This first in-depth review of India highlights the many success stories and discusses the advances made, as well as the challenges of India’s sustainable development. With an impressive track record of ensuring access to electricity and clean cooking for its citizens and growing renewable energy deployment, India is an inspiration for many countries around the world. The report provides insights into the rise of India in global energy markets. It offers an energy sector wide perspective with recommendations for how the government can strengthen energy policies to help further energy market reforms, notably in power and gas markets, as well as integrating higher shares of variable renewables, while addressing air and water quality as well as vulnerability to climate change.
