Workshop

Asian Steel Experts' Dialogue

Background

Steel is a vital material in modern economies and global demand for steel is expected to continue to grow to meet rising social and economic welfare needs. It is estimated that about half of the global crude steel demand growth by 2060 would be related to Asia. This region already accounted for 69% of global crude steel production in 2017, and it includes four of the ten top crude steel producing countries. Asia presents, therefore, a unique setting to discuss sustainable strategies for iron and steel production.

In the framework of the IEA Global Sustainable Technology Roadmap for the Iron & Steel sector, which was kicked-off last November in Paris, the IEA in collaboration with the Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd, organised an Asian Steel Experts Dialogue on 23-24 May 2018, in Shanghai, China. The event brought together more than 60 leading experts and key stakeholders from industry, government and the research community in the region. The workshop explored the main challenges the iron and steel sector is facing today in the Asian context, and which innovative technologies and strategies could support the sustainable transformation of steel production in the region.
