Long‐haul = more than 6 hour flight. HSR = high speed rail. A shift from short-haul flights to HSR assumes that: new rail routes avoid water bodies and tunnelling through elevated terrain; travel times are similar to aviation; and centres of demand are sufficiently large to ensure that high‐speed rail is economically viable.
