Guidelines for environmental protection during design, operation, dismantlement of LNG installations

Last updated: 10 February 2022

These guidelines do not include specific rules for limiting methane emissions. However, a few components are relevant to the control of methane emissions from LNG installations. For example, the rule specifies equipment design for components, such as liquids tanks (Art. 24). Gas detectors must be in place to detect leaks from LNG tanks (Art. 73). It also includes basic provisions for inspections and maintenance of security systems, such as gas detection systems. Safety valves should, when possible, be directed to flares or recovery systems for vented gas (Art 15). Otherwise, emissions can be released directly to the atmosphere. Broadly, equipment installed and operations conducted must be based on results of a risk analysis.
