SOR/2013-24 - Heavy-duty Vehicle and Engine Greenhouse Gas Emission Regulations

The objective of the Heavy-duty Vehicle and Engine Greenhouse Gas Emission Regulations (the Regulations) is to reduce GHG emissions by establishing mandatory GHG emission standards for new on-road heavy-duty vehicles and engines that are aligned with U.S. national standards. The regulations apply to companies manufacturing and importing new on-road heavy-duty vehicles and engines of the 2014 and later model years for the purpose of sale in Canada including the whole range of on-road heavy-duty full-size pickup trucks, vans, tractors and buses, as well as a wide variety of vocational vehicles such as freight, delivery, service, cement, and dump trucks.

Canadian CO2 emissions standards were revised in 2018 to align with the US Phase 2 standard, standing at 432-627 gCO2/bhp-hr for  2027 and subsequent model of tractors, vocational vehicles and spark ignition engines and 48.3-413 gCO2/t-mile for other heavy commercial vehicles.
The objective of phase 2 is to reduce CO2 emissions from heavy duty vehicles by 5-27% in 2027 compared to 2017 levels,  depending on vehicle category and weight.
