Strategy for the Development of Samoa 2008-2012

Relating to the Samoa National energy Policy the goal to increase energy security and increase electricity generation from renewable energy sources is echoed in the Strategy for the Development of Samoa 2008-2012.

During SDS 2008–2012, a reduction of dependency on fossil fuels in favor of renewable energy sources will be encouraged through implementation of five strategies:

  • Promoting the sustainable use of indigenous energy resources and renewable energy technologies;
  • Promoting partnerships with communities and all energy stakeholders, especially development partners, in the development of renewable energy programmes in Samoa;
  • Exploring training opportunities to build up capacity in renewable energy technologies;
  • Encouraging the commercial use of renewable energy research findings of the Institute of Research and Development; and,
  • Enhancing public knowledge and understanding of renewable energy and its costs and benefits.
