The Energy Development Guidelines for 2007-2016 aim to provide short- and long-term strategy for the efficient distribution and use of energy resources as well as to:

  • Increase security of energy supply;
  • Diversify energy sources;
  • Increase the share of electricity derived from renewable energy sources in Latvia’s total energy consumption and to increase energy self-sufficiency;
  • Improve the country’s energy supply infrastructure;
  • Support further energy market liberalisation;
  • Create suitable conditions for further integration with EU energy market;
  • Comply with obligations and targets resulting from the Kyoto Protocol and the Latvian Mitigation Programme 2005-2010.

Reaching these goals will help Latvia to preserve its natural environment, improve living conditions and stimulate the sustainable economic growth of the country.
