Climate Change Act

Last updated: 14 September 2020
The Climate Change Act (KSG) is a framework law that regulates how the Federal government carries out climate policy. The law includes sectoral targets for emissions in sectors not covered by the EU Emissions Trading System (currently until 2020), and obliges the Federal government to negotiate and implement measures to meet these targets. In addition, the KSG establishes a National Climate Change Committee (comprising a wide range of stakeholders), and mandates an annual report to Parliament and to the Committee. The current Federal government work programme (Regierungsprogramm) for 2020 to 2024 forsees a major overhaul of the Act.
