Voluntary Agreement on the Phase Out of Incandescent Light Bulbs
In September 2007, the British government announced that the country would begin phasing out incandescent lightbulbs in early 2008 in favour of low energy varieties. The aim of this voluntary agreement with major lightbulb makers and retailers and energy utilities was to cut up to five million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year by 2012 by cutting electricity demand. Superseded by new EU lighting standards.
