In July 2007, the Australian federal government introduced a rebate system for the installation of solar and heat pump hot water systems in existing homes. Rebates of AUD1000 are available where the installed hot water system: - replaces an electric storage hot water system; - is purchased and installed after 17 July 2007; - is a solar or heat pump hot water system that is eligible for at least 20 Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) at the time and place of installation; - is installed and has 20 RECs eligibility verified by a suitably qualified person (for example an electrician or plumber); The dwelling must be a principal place of residence and the applicants taxable family income must have been less than AUD100,000 in the most recent tax year as lodged with the Australian Taxation Office. The scheme was modified in February 2009 by the Energy Efficient Homes Package, which included a new Solar Hot Water Rebate scheme with no income limitation and with the rebate increased to AUD 1600 (see separate entry).
