Integrated Energy Plan for the Republic of South Africa

South Äfricas Integrated Energy Plan (IEP) was adopted on 19 March 2003. It focuses on South Africas energy needs from a holistic prospective and seeks to determine to what extent reliance should be placed on different energy sources such as coal, gas, renewable energy and nuclear energy. It addresses energy demand balanced with energy supply, transformation, economics and environmental considerations in concurrence with available resources. In addition, the IEP highlights the need for government to promote energy efficiency management and technology, lessen reliance on imported liquid fuels by exploring and developing oil and gas deposits and to continue with existing fuels plants, supplementing them with natural gas as a feedstock. Energy options outlined in the IEP: Four different energy options, with differing cost implications that are formulated in the IEP. One is based on a "business as usual" approach, the second is based on the same approach with the addition of selected technologies, the third assumes a deliberate policy to diversify supply and improve the environment, and the fourth is similar to the third but includes the option of selected technologies to obtain lower costs. The IEP also contains detailed information on the infrastructure spending required to develop the different energy resources.
