The Green Vouchers for Schools programme was announced by the federal government on 17 July 2007. The programme offers grants of up to AU$50,000 to Australian primary and secondary schools to for the installation of rainwater tanks and/or solar hot water systems. The main objectives of the programme are provide a practical opportunity for schools to improve their energy and water efficiency and to increase awareness of energy and water efficiency solutions in schools and the wider community. Projects funded with a "Green Voucher" must meet certain requirements: - the cost of on-ground works must be related to the installation of rainwater tanks and/or a solar hot water system; - the works must be carried out at a clearly defined school site; - the works must be completed by a suitably qualified person and installed according to relevant building standards; - all necessary regulations must be met and approvals obtained; and - cost overruns must be fully substantiated. On 1 July 2008 the programme was replaced by the National Solar Schools Program. Green Vouchers claims will continue to be accepted for eligible expenses incurred or contracted between 17 July 2007 and 30 June 2008. Schools that have not submitted a claim for Green Vouchers by 30 June 2008 but that have incurred eligible expenses can still lodge a claim. Schools that do lodge a claim after the 30 June 2008 deadline will be required to provide evidence of their financial and/or contractual commitments.
