National Battery Strategy
The National Battery Strategy outlines Australia's plan to develop a globally competitive battery industry by 2035, leveraging the country's natural advantages to strengthen economic resilience and support the transition to renewable energy. Australia aims to move beyond mining to capture more value in the battery supply chain.
The strategy focuses on five key strategic priorities:
1. Manufacturing Capabilities
- Aims to strengthen economic resilience through battery manufacturing
- Supported by the AUD 523.2 million Battery Breakthrough production incentive
- Focuses on high-value battery products aligned with Australia's advantages
- Includes AUD 20.3 million for Building Future Battery Capabilities measure
2. Knowledge and Skills Development
- Building workforce capabilities for battery manufacturing and deployment
- Supporting research and innovation in battery technologies
- Developing training programmes and skills initiatives
- Creating secure, Australian-made jobs in the sector
3. Global Supply Chain Integration
- Securing Australia's position in global battery supply chains
- Developing international partnerships and trade relationships
- Strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities
- Supporting supply chain diversification
4. Sustainability and Standards
- Leading in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards
- Developing circular economy initiatives for battery recycling
- Establishing safety standards and best practices
- Creating sustainable battery manufacturing processes
5. Government Coordination
- Coordinating efforts across federal, state, and territory governments
- Aligning policies and initiatives across jurisdictions
- Supporting infrastructure development
- Streamlining processes and reducing barriers
The strategy targets achieving 82% renewable energy by 2030 and positions Australia to meet the projected demand for 19 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030, growing to 43 GW by 2040.
