LEAP-RE

LEAP-RE is a mechanism for funding R&D and capacity-building projects of mutual benefit to Africa and Europe to achieve sustainable energy access and development. LEAP-RE conducts joint calls funded by nine African and European funding agencies, with an additional top-up from the EU. The LEAP-RE program creates a long-term partnership among African and European stakeholders, and projects must have both African and European partners. The budget of the program for the call in 2022 was around EUR 32 million, including EUR 15 million from the EU. The projects in the LEAP-RE initiative focus on priority themes such as smart-grid and off-grid systems, geothermal energy, productive and domestic uses, access to energy, recycling, and more.
