The Free Zone Act

Last updated: 27 June 2024

The Free Zone Act was enacted in 2014 to promote Uganda's trade activities. In particular, goods entering a free port zone can deviate from usual custom control. Exemption of import duties and taxes are applicable for goods entering into and/or exported from free zones.

In particular, the manufacturing sector which potentially includes energy related applications, is among Uganda's prioritised sector so long the company can demonstrate an increase in new investment, adoption of new technologies, expansion of jobs, and other relevant criteria.

Screening and authorisation is required for the authority to grant the necessary approvals.
