Restrictive measures against Iran

The European Union has been implementing restrictive measures against Iran since 2010. The initial set of measures has been regularly updated since then, and notably include the following energy sector related policies: 

Oil and other energy-related import restrictions

• Ban on imports of crude oil, natural gas, petrochemical, and petroleum products. 

 
Oil transport services

• Provision of flagging and classification services to Iranian oil tankers and cargo vessels is prohibited
• Supply of vessels designed for the transport or storage of oil and petrochemical products to Iranian persons, entities or bodies (or others transporting or storing Iranian oil or petrochemical products) is prohibited
• Construction of new oil tankers for Iran or for Iranian persons or entities is prohibited
• Supply of vessels for the transport or storage of oil or petrochemical products are prohibited
• Sale, supply or transfer of naval equipment and technology for ship building, maintenance or refit are prohibited
• Sale, supply or transfer of graphite, or raw or semi-finished materials such as steel or aluminium are prohibited

Financial and business services measures (both in Iran or from Iran)

• Investment in the petrochemical industry is prohibited
• Sale or supply of key equipment used in the energy sector are prohibited

Export restrictions

• Exports of dual-use goods and goods that could be used in nuclear enrichment-related activities are prohibited
