Low Carbon Economy Fund

Last updated: 29 May 2024

In 2017, Canada launched a Low Carbon Economy Fund (LCEF) meant to contribute to national GHG emission reductions, support community economic development and resilience and generate jobs, in line with the government's   plans to achieve GHG emissions reductions in 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050.

The LCEF was replenished in 2022, in the framework of the publication of the first 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP).
Government grants will be provided through through four streams:

  • The Indigenous Leadership Fund, targeting renewable energy, energy efficiency and low-carbon heating projects led by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis governments, communities, and organizations.
  • The Implementation Readiness Fund, targeting training and other just transition-enabling projects led by lower capacity entities and organizations.
  • The Leadership Fund which provides funding to provinces and territories
  • The Low Carbon Challenge Fund which targets a wider range of project holders contributing to the deployment of  low-carbon technologies.
