Canadian Sanctions Related to Russia
Canada's Special Economic Measures Act incorporates sanctions related to Russia since March 2014.
Further amendments on the regulation have been made, imposing an asset freeze and dealings prohibition on designated persons, as well as restrictions on certain sectors, such as the energy sector.
The Special Economic Measures Act notably prohibit any person in Canada and any Canadian outside Canada from exporting, selling, supplying or shipping the provision of any services referred to the Russian oil, gas, chemical and manufacturing industries. As a result, the Minister of Natural Resources announced in February 2022 that Canada will ban crude oil imports from Russia. As per the Canada Energy Regulator, Canada has not been importing any crude oil from Russia since 2019. It also prohibits the import of aluminium and steel products originating from that country.
