Funding of transport charging stations

Last updated: 7 May 2024

In order to drive the required growth in EV adoption and ensure that EVs become a viable alternative to internal combustion engine vehicles, the Government intends to put in place a series of measures supporting the rapid development of EV charging infrastructure. Adequate charging infrastructure is an essential prerequisite to ensure that electric vehicles become accessible to a large majority of citizens, and charging infrastructure must not become a sticking point in the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem.

The Government is in the process of developing an aid scheme to 1. Support for publicly accessible charging infrastructure;  2. Support for charging infrastructure not accessible to the public;  3. Support for the national public charging infrastructure currently owned and operated by DSOs necessary to adapt to the new EU rules on the ownership and operation of charging infrastructure.

The total cost of the project is estimated at €40 million, of which €30.5 million (76%) to be supported by the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).
