National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) 2020

Last updated: 9 August 2024

The National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB) 2020 sets out the technical requirements for the energy-efficient design and construction of new buildings and additions. This supersedes the 2017 edition which aimed at improving the level of energy efficiency provided by the code and to expand on the compliance options.

The code sets minimum energy efficiency requirements, including net-zero energy ready-tiered performance levels for adoption by provinces and territories by 2030. The new code's targets are 10-15% more efficient than previous codes and 60%-70% more efficient at the highest tiers.
