New Zealand Energy Strategy (NZES)
The New Zealand Energy Strategy sets the strategic direction for the energy sector and the role energy will play in the New Zealand economy. In the current New Zealand Energy Strategy (NZES) for 2011-2021, the Government's goal is for New Zealand to make the most of its abundant energy potential through the environmentally responsible development and efficient use of the country's diverse energy resources. The New Zealand Energy Strategy 2011-2021 sets out four priority areas: Diverse resource development; Environmental responsibility; Efficient use of energy; and Secure and affordable energy. The NZES provides the overarching policy context for a suite of targeted companion measures which include the New Zealand Energy Efficiency and Conservation Strategy (NZEECS), the New Zealand Transport Strategy (NZTS) and a Framework for a New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme. New Zealand renewable energy 2025 target: New Zealand aims to generate 90% of its total electricity generation from renewable energy sources by 2025. The previous New Zealand Energy Strategy (NZES) was released on 11 October 2007, setting out the vision of the then government, of a sustainable, low emissions energy system, and describes the actions that will be taken to make this vision a reality. The Strategy responded to two major energy challenges: the need to reduce greenhouse gases to respond to climate change and to deliver clean, secure, affordable energy while treating the environment responsibly.
