Amendment to Waste Management Act - includes standards to improve circularity of EV battery wastes

Last updated: 11 December 2023

The Korean Ministry of Environment announced legislation to unify waste management, including hazardous chemicals, and to improve waste-related regulations.
The amendment includes standards to improve circularity of electric vehicle batteries waste. Under the amendment, the previous obligation to install waste recycling facilities will be exempted for electric vehicle battery wastes that are reused. To encourage electric vehicle battery recycling, both the storage and treatment period have been expanded from 30 days to 180 days. This is in response to the recycling industry’s struggle to secure raw materials with the previous standard of restricting storage capacity of recyclable waste such as end-of-life batteries and industrial scraps to less than 30 days worth of capacity that can be handled per day.
