Germany has launched in November 2022 JenErgieReal, a regulatory sandbox which aims at accelerating the supply of sustainable electricity and heat and transform the urban energy system in the city of Jena. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action which will provide a total of EUR 20.56 million over five years.

The regulatory sandbox in Jena will pave the way for the development and implementation of new technologies  including large-scale electrical storage systems, PV and solar thermal systems, as well as electric vehicles and charging stations. Moreover, the regulatory sandbox in Jena will also evaluate the potential of using  a virtual power plant to  link generators and consumers as well as storage systems, and show the potential of sector coupling in a smart city.
