Act no. 536 of 6 June 2007 on The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS)
The Act establishes the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) as an independent and self-governing research institution under the present Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities, to provide a scientific basis for exploration and exploitation of mineral resources and protection of natural values in Denmark and Greenland. GEUS’ mandate includes conducting research, mapping, monitoring, data collection, data management and communication on the above to exploit and protect Denmark’s and Greenland’s geological resources. GEUS provides geological consultancy to public authorities and is managed by an independent board and a managing director.
The 2007 Act does not extend to Greenland or the Faroe Islands; however the Executive Order on by-laws for the GEUS associated with the 2007 Act lays out that tasks concerning minerals resources in Greenland shall be carried out within the framework of the Act on Mineral Resources in Greenland and follow from prior notification to the Greenland Self-Government and relevant municipal authorities.
