European Raw Materials Initiative

Last updated: 12 December 2023

The European Raw Materials Initiative is a strategic plan designed to tackle the issue of raw materials access in the European Union. The initiative covers all raw materials used by European industry except materials from agricultural production and materials used as fuel. The initiative established the raw materials supply group, with representatives from EU countries, EEA countries, EU candidate countries, and organisations representing stakeholders in industry, research and civil society to advise the Commission and oversee the initiative’s implementation.
The initiative has three pillars:
-Fair and sustainable supply of raw materials from global markets

-Sustainable supply of raw materials within the EU

-Resource efficiency and supply of secondary raw materials through recycling
