Petrol and diesel car phase out

Last updated: 16 May 2023

In November 2020, the UK government announced it will end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars in the UK by 2030. The end of sales will be conducted in two phases:
1) There will be a phase-out date for the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans brought forward to 2030.
2) All new cars and vans will need to be fully zero emission at the tailpipe from 2035.

Between 2030 and 2035, new cars and vans can be sold if they have the capability to drive a significant distance with zero emissions (for example, plug-in hybrids or full hybrids), and this will be defined through consultation.
