2018 - 2030 Methane Reduction Plan

In joining the Global Methane Pledge, Korea announced a methane reduction plan that included a national target to reduce emissions from 28 million tons in 2018 to 19.7 million tons in 2030, a 30% reduction. The government recognised the need to reduce methane emissions across the agricultural, waste and energy sectors and announced specific targets for each sector. The reduction plan announced specific sectoral targets for the energy, agriculture and waste sectors of reducing methane by 28.6%, 20.9% and 46.5%, respectively, from 2018 levels by 2030.

 

For the energy sector, the methane reduction plan identifies several actions, including reducing consumption fossil fuels by reducing coal and LNG power generation and improving energy efficiency. The plan notes that Korea will work towards calculating natural gas fugitive emissions based on country-specific emissions factors rather than default factors.

 

The plan requires relevant ministries to prepare a 2030 implementation plan that takes these targets into account.  The government further committed to actively work together with key partners on methane, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.
