Energy Innovation Program

The Energy Innovation Program is a follow-on to the ecoENERGY Innovation Innitiative, and it support the energy transition through research, development and demonstration projects. Under the program, an R&D and demonstration fund that can be tailored to specific clean energy technology challenges, technology readiness levels and types of recipients via regular calls for proposals. The program is managed by the Office of Energy, Research and Development (OERD), has an annual budget of CAD 24 million, and runs targeted calls.The key priority areas of the program are:- renewables- smart grid and storage systems,- reduction of diesel use in industry in northern and remote communities- methane and volatile organic compound (VOC) emission reduction- reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in building sector- carbon capture, use and storage- improvement of energy efficiency in industry2021 update: the government of British Colombia and Shell Canada are also providing 35 million CAD each for the creation of the Centre, set to launch in 2021. The centre will focus on clean fuels, renewable natural gas, low-carbon hydrogen and carbon capture, utilization and storage. The federal government's budget will be delivered through the NRCan's Energy Innovation Programme.
