Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E): Methane Observation Networks with Innovative Technology to Obtain Reduction (MONITOR)

Last updated: 21 February 2022

The program provides funding for the development of low-cost sensing systems needed to reduce methane leaks anywhere from the well pad to local distribution networks, reduce safety hazards, promote more efficient use of our domestic natural gas resources, and reduce the overall greenhouse gas impact from natural gas development.

The projects that comprise ARPA-E’s Methane Observation Networks with Innovative Technology to Obtain Reductions (MONITOR) program are developing innovative technologies to cost-effectively and accurately locate and measure methane emissions associated with natural gas production.

The program ultimately provided USD 30 million to 12 projects, including the development of a field test facility at Colorado State University that provides a testing ground for researchers and companies that are developing innovative methane detection technology.
