Climate Change Strategy 2030 and Action Plan for 2021-2023
In 2020 the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture (MEPA) with technical assistance of GIZ developed Georgia’s 2030 Climate Change Strategy and 2021-2023 Action Plan (CSAP). The 2021-2030 CSAP identifies measures and actions that support the development of the Georgian economy and infrastructure in a way which sets Georgia on a pathway to meet its international obligations and national ambitions for climate change mitigation. It serves as an action plan for the implementation of Georgia’s existing NDC, but also as an important orientation to inform the determination of an appropriate and realistic level of ambition when updating the NDC in future revision cycles. The action plan CAP will be updated on a 2-3 year cycle, to be aligned with future revisions of the NDC and the NECP – ensuring coherence between sectoral policies, the NDC, and the NECP. The Climate Strategy and Action Plan identifies a long-term vision for the reduction greenhouse gas emissions for 2030 and Specific activities for 2021-2023. By 2030 overall greenhouse gas emissions should not exceed 29.25 Mt CO2eq. Sectoral targets to reduced emissions by 2030 compared to business-as-usual include: Energy generation and transmission 15%, Industry 5%, Transport 15%. The Plan also sets a target to increase CO2 Absorbtion capacity of forests 10% from 2015 level, and deploy climate friendly technologies in Buildings, Agriculture and waste management.
