A Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy - Canada's strengthened climate plan 2020

Last updated: 15 June 2021
Canada's Prime Minister announced Canada's strengthened climate plan, A Healthy Environment and a Healthy Economy to achieve environmental and economic goals. The proposed plan will be supported by an initial 15 billion CAD in investments, will focus on supporting a growing middle class for greater prosperity in a cleaner and more sustainable environment. The five pillars of the plan comprise:- Make the places we live and gather more affordable by cutting energy waste: a series of investments and measures focused on improving the efficiency of homes and buildings, to improve affordability and create new jobs in construction, technology, manufacturing and sales.- Make clean affordable transportation and power available in every community: expanding the supply of clean electricity through investments that increase renewables and next-generation clean energy and technology, as well as encourage cleaner modes of transport.- Continue to ensure pollution isn't free and households get more money back : Changes to the carbon pricing policy that would impose additional fees on pollution while returning the revenue back to households.- Build Canada's clean industrial advantage: A series of investments and funding measures to support decarbonisation projects for large emitters, including for innovation and the production of low-carbon goods and services, while creating well-paying, resilient jobs.- Embrace the power of nature to support healthier families and more resilient communities: various measures that would reduce pollution, increase employment, and improve climate resilience to extreme weather by planting 2 billion trees, supporting sustainable farming and better conserving nature. The 2020 Climate Plan builds on the work from provinces and territories which were gathered under the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change (PCF), released in 2016. The 2020 Plan will help exceed the 2030 Paris Agreement emissions reduction target and establish the building blocks to get to net-zero by 2050.
