In June 2020, the Hungarian parliament passed a law setting a climate neutrality goal for 2050. The preparation of a national clean development strategy 2050 is ongoing.  Commitments include phasing out of lignite fired generation after 2025 and the rapid expansion of solar and gas fired capacity. The Law no. XLIV 2020 on Climate Protection, also set out a reduction of GHG emissions by at least 40% by 2030 compared to the 1990 levels.
From 2030, in the case of final energy consumption going beyond 2005 levels, the increased consumption will be provided from carbon neutral energy sources.
By 2030, the share of renewable energy sources in the gross final energy consumption will be at least 21%.
