The House of Representatives approved a proposal for a levy of between CHF30 and CHF120 ($32 and $126) per ticket for flights departing Switzerland.
The tax is expected to generate revenues of about CHF500 million a year. A key element of the new CO2 tax is that large parts of the proceeds are refunded to the population. The part that is not refunded will flow into the new Climate Fund that will be dedicated to investments for the energy transitions. The new law will enter into force on 1 January 2022 unless there is a referendum initiated against the law.
