On protection of the atmospheric air

Last updated: 4 February 2022

In 2016, the Turkmen parliament adopted a new basic air protection law, which replaced the previous Law no. 182 dating from 1996.  The law provides the basic legal and organisational structure for control of emissions of air pollutants, ensuring environmental security, and prevention of negative impact of economic activities on human health and environments.

The law is administered by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, which was formed January 2019 following transfer from the previous State Committee for Environmental Protection and Land Resources.

The law provides for the setting of air quality standards, a program of monitoring implementation, and a procedure for conducting a greenhouse gas inventory.

The law includes a definition of “greenhouse gas” that specifically includes methane, although there are no methane-specific air quality standards or pollution limits.
