World Energy Outlook 2023 – official Brussels launch

COP28 in Dubai takes place from 30 November through 12 December and arrives at an important moment for global climate cooperation, with the conclusion of the first Global Stocktake under the Paris Agreement.

Europe has played a critical role in promoting key global goals, such as the tripling of installed renewables capacity and the doubling of the rate of energy efficiency improvement by 2030, but more is needed if we are to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the global energy crisis, governments have unleashed unprecedented levels of support for clean energy deployment and manufacturing. The growing stakes of the clean energy economy are evident in this boom of manufacturing projects and announcements, but also in growing trade tensions in these clean energy supply chains.

The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) World Energy Outlook is the energy sector’s flagship report and guide to fast moving and hugely consequential trends.

Join IEA Executive Director, Dr Fatih Birol, at the Brussels launch of the 2023 World Energy Outlook. Birol will consider the full range of issues dominating the energy sector in Europe, as delegates prepare to meet in Dubai for COP28.

Questions will include:

• What is the outlook for fossil fuels, and why is demand for each of the three fossil fuels set to peak this decade even without new climate policies?
• One year on from the global energy crisis of 2022, which saw Europe at its epicentre, what does the outlook hold for energy and economic security for Europe?
• Can the energy sector still achieve a 1.5°C-compatible pathway in this geopolitically fractured context, and what role could Europe play?
