Workshop

Kick-off Workshop for the IEA Global Iron & Steel Technology Roadmap

Background

The International Energy Agency (IEA) is kicking-off a new Technology Roadmap to set out a vision and priority actions for technologies and strategies in the iron & steel sector in the context of IEA long-term sustainable scenarios. Steel is a vital material in modern economies and global demand for steel is expected to continue to grow to meet rising social and economic welfare needs. Meeting growing steel demand presents challenges as it steers between environmental and competitiveness pressures and opportunities. Through innovation enabled through private-public collaborative efforts, the iron & steel sector has a major opportunity to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, develop more sustainable products and enhance its competitiveness.

To provide strategic insights to this project, the IEA hosted a workshop on 20 November 2017 in Paris. The workshop brought together leading steel experts and key stakeholders from industry, government and the research community. The workshop explored the challenges the iron & steel sector is facing today and the innovative technologies and strategies that are being explored to improve the environmental sustainability of steel production.
