IEA at CEM15/MI-9

Over the years, the IEA has contributed data, analysis and policy recommendations to support the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and Mission Innovation (MI) at both the technical and ministerial levels. The IEA coordinates several of CEM initiatives, including those on electric vehicles, energy efficient appliances and hydrogen, and tracks clean energy innovation policies and clean energy R&D spending on behalf of MI.

The IEA will join the CEM15/MI-9 Ministerial Meeting in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, with a delegation led by the Executive Director Fatih Birol.

During the week, the IEA delegation will be directly involved in several activities, including speaking engagements at almost 20 of the official CEM15/MI-9 side events. The following side events are organised or co-organised by the IEA:

• 1 October, 09:00 – 10:00 BRT: Fostering Energy Innovation in Emerging and Development Economies. At this MI side event, the IEA will launch a new report with 11 case studies that highlight experiences with developing and implementing policies in support of energy innovation in emerging and developing economies.
  
  
• 1 October, 14:00 – 15:00 BRT: Tripling Investments to Double Energy Efficiency by 2030 Mobilizing Finance. Co-organised with the World Economic Forum and the Collaborative Labeling and Appliance Standards Program under the CEM’s Super-Efficient Equipment and Deployment (SEAD) Initiative, this event will focus on the necessity of increasing investments into energy efficient appliances to achieve the COP28 objective of doubling the rate of efficiency progress this decade.
  
  
• 1 October, 14:00 – 17:00 BRT: Clean Cooking Technical Workshop. Ahead of the Ministerial-level meeting on clean cooking on 4 October, which will focus on catalysing action in line with the new G20 Clean Cooking Roadmap prepared by the IEA, Sustainable Energy for All (SEforAll) and the World Bank at Brazil’s request, this technical meeting with bring together experts to discuss clean cooking industry and market development, as well as key areas where more research and data is needed.
  
  
• 1 October, 16:30 – 17:30 BRT: Equity in Energy: Pathways to a Just Transition and Skilled Workforce. During this event organised with partners, the IEA will launch its new report on the skills needs to support global progress on energy efficiency.
  
  
• 1 October, 17:45 - 18:45 BRT: Empowering Energy Regulators to Tackle Decabonisation. This side event co-hosted with the Regulatory Energy Transition Accelerator (RETA) and other partners will the focus on highlighting the experience of energy regulators and their role in the energy transition.
  
  
• 2 October, 09:00 – 10:00 BRT: Launch of the Global Hydrogen Review 2024. The event marks the official launch IEA’s annual Global Hydrogen Review 2024, which tracks low-emission hydrogen policies, markets and technologies. This year’s edition includes a special focus on Latin America.
  
  
• 2 October, 14:00 – 15:00 BRT: CEM-MI to COP: Accelerating Sector Transitions through Stronger International Collaboration – Breakthrough Agenda Report Launch. The IEA will launch the Breakthrough Agenda 2024 report, co-authored with the UN High Level Champions. The report finds that international collaboration has delivered in some high-emissions sectors, but more widespread efforts are needed to achieve clean energy transitions and reach 2030 climate goals.
