Decarbonising Oil: the Role of CO2-EOR

The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) together ran a key workshop focused on "Decarbonising Oil: the role of CO₂-EOR". The aim of the event was to discuss the potential for using CO₂-EOR for CO₂ storage and increasing oil production also known as "EOR+" or advanced CO₂-EOR.

This two-day workshop brought together 60 participants including public policy makers, researchers, industry experts and IEA and KAPSARC representatives to discuss ways for CO₂-EOR to play a meaningful role in national energy production and emissions reductions.

The CO₂-EOR workshop heard presentations across various technical and non-technical aspects on advanced CO₂-EOR. The workshop also allowed, under Chatham House rules, a free exchange of views especially on the challenges and opportunities for countries to incrementally increase oil production and reduce their CO₂ emissions captured from various anthropogenic sources by storing permanently CO₂ underground.

The IEA and KAPSARC joint workshop will inform upcoming work on these key aspects of advanced CO₂-EOR including future publications and targeted workshops from both organizations, on this important topic.
