Energy side events

COP 17 side events organised by the IEA and the South African Department of Energy

The IEA participated in a series of events at the UN climate change talks in Durban. The events were hosted by the South African Department of Energy in collaboration with the IEA, and in partnership with other organisations including the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe).

Key IEA messages on renewables, fuel efficiency, financing energy access, carbon markets, carbon capture and storage and energy efficiency were disseminated to a broad range of stakeholders, in particular from emerging and developing countries.

High-level participants in the events included: the South African Minister of Energy, Ms. Elizabeth Peters; the South African Deputy Minister of Energy, Ms. Barbara Thompson; the Executive Director of the IEA, Maria van der Hoeven, and the Deputy Executive Director of the IEA, Richard Jones; and the Director General of IRENA, Mr. Adnan Amin. Building on the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding and Joint Work Programme, the events further reinforced ongoing collaboration between the IEA and South Africa, and provided an excellent platform for exchange among a great number of stakeholders from industry, government and specialised agencies.
