Share of emissions from oil and gas operations covered by international initiatives to tackle methane emissions, 2021

Global oil and gas operations resulted in 2.4 Gt CO2-eq from methane emissions in 2021. Shares of emissions reflect countries participating in the Global Methane Pledge. One tonne of methane is considered to be equivalent to 30 tonnes of CO2 based on the 100‐year global warming potential (IPCC, 2021). Methane emissions would be equivalent to around 6.5 Gt CO2-eq if the 20-year global warming potential is used (with one tonne of methane equivalent to 82 tonnes of CO2).
