Notes

Includes companies reporting 50% or more of their revenue in these sectors, per Bloomberg Industrial Classification System (BICS), and for which both reported R&D and revenue data are available in a given year. Total R&D expenditure (not only energy-related R&D) is scaled by the company’s revenue share in the reported sector. Automotive is shown on the right-hand axis in the chart of aggregate reported R&D spending. Like other classifications such as ISIC and NACE, BICS provides a structure for analysing data related to different economic activities. It is used here because of the high degree of disaggregation of firm-level data for energy-related sectors.
