Electrification of Halifax public transit – Nova Scotia

Last updated: 27 October 2021

The Canadian Government will contribute CAD 44.8 million to help bringing in 60 new electric buses to Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). Once in service, they are expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3,800 tonnes annually by 2030. The Nova Scotia government is investing CAD 37 million, and HRM CAD 29.8 million, with a total project cost of CAD 112 million.

Funding will also be used to purchase charging equipment and expand the Ragged Lake Transit Centre. The facility will be retrofitted, including solar panels, to achieve a net-zero standard.

Construction on the facility is expected to begin in 2022 and be complete by 2023. All buses should be delivered by 2024, with the first deliveries starting in 2023.
