Low emission zones (LEZ) programme

Last updated: 9 May 2023

The Spanish Ministry of Transport enacted a EUR 1.5 billion recovery funding programme for national Low Emission Zones (LEZ). The objective of this initiative is to decarbonize cities and improve air quality, through the deployment of low-emission, electric or hydrogen public transport modes, and the extension of pedestrian and cycling infrastructures. The investment will be allocated to municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants and provincial capitals, as well as municipalities of between 20,000 and 50,000 inhabitants.

The government budget was allocated to subnational authorities through two calls for projects in 2021 and 2022.
